It's almost here...
that summer night when we sit on a blanket in the grass with our family,
gazing upwards in awe as fireworks shoot across the dark sky
and explode above our heads in a blaze of light and color!
Don't you just love pyrotechnics??
Here is a fun Fireworks Cake you can make for the 4th of July!
Make a white cake mix.
Divide the batter into 3 bowls.
Leave one bowl white, dye one red and one blue.
Line the bottoms of 2 eight inch cake pans with wax paper and grease the sides.
Layer the batter in your pans, dropping by spoonfuls.
For marble effect: Drag a knife through the batter, making lines in a side to side motion;
then repeat this motion going up and down.
Be careful not to mix the colors together.
Bake your cake as directed, and cool completely.
Frost your cake with white frosting, making the top as smooth as possible.
Put the cake in the freezer for at least 45 minutes to harden the frosting.
Read a good book while you wait...
Take your cake out of the freezer.
With gel food coloring, make a line of dots from the middle of the cake to the outside edge.
Starting at the outside dot, brush over the dots toward the center with a paint brush.
Clean your brush, and repeat all the way around your cake.
Work with one color at a time, and do not overlap them.
I also pressed star shaped sprinkles into the frosting on the bottom.
Serve up some cake before the fireworks start...
Enjoy!

It is a layer cake, so you need a pan for each layer. If you wanted to simplify, you could bake it in one 9X13 pan instead.

ReplyDeleteDid you frost your cake with regular can frosting or cool whip? Do you always put your cakes in the freezer to harden the frosting? To help it set better?
ReplyDeleteI made my favorite cream cheese frosting. Cool Whip would be too soft for this design. I put this cake in the freezer because I didn't want my paint brush to press into the frosting. Hope this helps! :0)
DeleteSo you normally do not put a cake in the freezer? I'm thinking that when I make cupcakes and put them in the refrigerator, it never quite hardens enough. Perhaps I should in the freezer for a bit? Never would have thought of that so, thank you Robin!

ReplyDeleteAlso, how do you keep the top flat? Whenever I try to stack cakes it always end up with the top having a bump and breaking because the bottom layer isn't completely flat either.
DeleteHi Annabelle! After your cake layers have cooled, you need to level the tops. I have a tool I use for this, but you can use a large serrated knife to cut off the rounded top and make it flat. (Then you get to eat the scraps!) When frosting, I use a bench scraper to make the sides nice and smooth. It is my "can't live without" decorating tool!

I love your cake and I am making it for the 4th this year! Silly question, is this one white cake mix?(i have never had success with cakes that stack) Also what is the best kind of icing to use when stacking cakes?

Hi Heather! Yes, I used one white cake mix. It really doesn't matter what kind of frosting you use with a layer cake. You could buy a tub of frosting or make your own. I made my favorite cream cheese frosting, which is on this post. Have fun baking! :0)

ReplyDeleteHi Robin, I made this and my cakes sunk in the middle where the blue and red batter was. I've never had this happen. I use baking strips and typically end up with fluffy, even cakes. Is it due to the extra stirring of the batter to add the color? Any suggestions?

Hi, this cake looks fabulous. I am definately going to have to make it for Fourth of July this year! However I normally don't bake with white cake mix... If you could tell me what recipe you used or any recipes you would recommend that would be amazing. I'm just not sure if some recipes wouldn't work with the coloring and all. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just made this cake for the 4th of July -- loved how yours looked! I had the same problem that "Leah" posted about last year where the red and blue parts of the cake were really dense and didn't rise properly. I had to throw the cake out because it was so bad. After the fact, I've read several sources online that say to mix food coloring in with the wet ingredients while mixing the original cake batter (to avoid overmixing) but I'm not sure how to do that when making 3 different colors of batter and get the distribution of ingredients just right, plus your directions say to add the food coloring last. The other sources also say it shouldn't matter whether I used liquid dye or gel dye, but I used liquid and feel like that was part of the problem. What do you suggest? I'd really like to try this again and have it work this time. Thanks!!
